Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Ready to shake things up with your quilty friends this year and plan a retreat with a theme?

Adding a special theme will get everyone even more excited about your retreat, and you know the pictures will be a TON of fun!

Keep reading for 7 great ideas for your next quilt retreat!

#1 Planned Group Projects

When you plan a retreat, you can also plan a group project!

This could simply mean that you have everyone make a specific quilt block for a specific project. You certainly don’t have to plan a project or even a theme for your retreat. It’s always nice to have options though.

Consider having a fabric swap at your retreat. Ask your friends to bring something like 5” squares or Fat quarters or 2.5” strips.

#2 Hire an instructor

You could also organize an instructor to teach a technique or offer a little project as a learning experience through the course of the retreat.

Our instructor, Tabatha, in her element - coffee & quilting!

You might not know this, but when you book your private group with us, you can also book a 1-3 day workshop in ALL types of techniques like intro to machine applique, foundations paper piecing, quilt-as-you go, or scrappy mystery quilts!

#3 Make it a UFO themed retreat

Everybody brings something they started but haven’t finished and the goal is to finish at the retreat. Offer a prize to the person that finishes the most!

#4 Project Linus

Gather your friends for a Project Linus themed retreat with the goal of making at least 1 baby quilt sized top per person.

There are a lot of good patterns that would make this project fun and easy, and of course we all feel good when we donate a quilt to a cause!

The 3 yard quilt pattern is a fabulous choice or you can use up those novelty prints with an I spy pattern.

#5 Quilt of Valor retreat

Have your attendees bring red/white/blue fabrics to make blocks or tops specifically for Quilts of Valor.

If you held this in the summer, you could easily find patriotic decor for your tables or r/w/b cookies or cupcakes for snacks.

You could make up small gift bags with the patriotic fabrics and have a challenge to make a block with them!

#6 Halloween

We like to host a halloween themed retreat every year!

Everyone is encouraged to dress up in costume during the retreat. The swag is holiday themed and the project will be geared toward Autumn or Halloween. There is plenty of candy to go around as well!

#7 Vintage sewing machines

Invite your friends to come sew with their vintage machines. Bring those featherweights and 1930s reproduction prints or vintage hankies for a real vintage feel!
